Cal-YAF is the California wing of the nationally recognized conservative organization Young Americans for Freedom. It has a well-footed history that in yesteryears enjoyed the talents of young Californians who have become some of America’s most notable individuals. Reagan and Rohrabacher, Lacy and Lewis, Nolan and Nofziger, and so many others have been involved in Cal-YAF at one point or another. Cal-YAF is the only principled conservative grassroots political organization for young people in the State of California. We are what college partisans will never be, an organization run by young people for young people, operating without restriction on behalf of the conservative cause. We scoff at their sunshine patriotism. We perpetrate the most daring political activities, because as Senator Goldwater once declared, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice,” and, “Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.” Cal-YAF led the resurgence of the national organization’s presence on college campuses. We were the spark that ignited Reagan’s Presidential candidacies in ’68, ’76, and ’80, and his gubernatorial candidacy in ’66. We have led protests in favor of aid to the contras, anti-communist policies, and the dissolution of the United Nations. And we led the purge of the old guard of YAFers on the National Board who had forgotten their activist roots. One of our main objectives for the near future is the restoration of the Republican Party’s grand, conservative, beginnings. Today we find the party collapsing under the girth of red-ink Republicans who flee from the Reaganomics of Smith, Hayek, and Friedman. This we will end. Membership in Cal-YAF is granted and maintained by one’s level of conservative activism. We are an organization founded and governed by the Sharon Statement, a set of principles that borrows its name from the Connecticut town in which it was written. They are a set of principles that serve as the foundation for what Reagan called, “one of the most effective organizations to emerge in the struggle to secure American ideals.” We are not a partisan organization. Our handiwork bites at the ankles of both the Republican and Democrat parties. Our aim is conservative victory - victory in spite of all socialist terror - victory however long and hard the road may be. On youth depends tomorrow’s sunrise and we aim to make the sun rise on freer lands than whence it set.
